Meditation 101: Understanding the Basics

Updated: Aug 4, 2024

Meditation is a practice of training the mind to achieve a state of mental clarity, emotional calm, and heightened awareness. While there are many forms of meditation, most techniques involve focusing the attention on a single point of reference, such as the breath, a mantra, or an object.

To begin meditating, find a quiet space where you won't be disturbed. Sit comfortably with your spine straight and close your eyes. Bring your attention to your breath, noticing the sensation of air entering and leaving your body. When thoughts arise, gently redirect your focus back to your breath.

With regular practice, meditation can cultivate a sense of inner peace and resilience that extends into all areas of life. Start with just a few minutes each day and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice.
